Maldives why so expensive
Hello, I would like to know how much is it expected to spend on food on Maldives, lets say for lunch and dinner per person on an average. Hi there, Generally for guesthouses on remote islands guests book a package that includes meals. Since the islands are small there are not numerous restaurants to go to so the guesthouses offer meals and make them part of the package.
Nomadic Boys. We went last November to the Maldives and you are right: a lot has changed. We stayed on a small island in the Alif Alif attoll called Thoddoo Island. We noticed guesthouses were being built everythere but it is still beautiful and not crowded yet. I wonder if in a few years, Maldives will suffer the same fate as the thai islands: Mass tourism, dead corals, etc….
Hey guys, thanks for the update about Thoddoo Island. Anyway, thanks again. I really appreciate you posting about your recent experience in the Maldives!
Where are you guys based? Hopefully in Maldives with the slow building of the lower budget tourism industry they will be able to keep a better handle on it. My mom and I are planning to go on a trip and I have 2 weeks off work.
Do you think two weeks is too much time to spend in Maldives? Or should I go somewhere else closeby for a week? Hi there, As much as we LOVE the Maldives, depending on what you do there, 2 weeks is a lot of time to spend in one island there.
BUT there are some options to mix it up within the Maldives so that 2 weeks will fly by. And 2 weeks means you can see more of the Maldives than most people. One option is diving — are either of you scuba divers? There are many dive cruises and even for non-divers that are 7 nights and you get to see several atolls of the Maldives. There are boats like ScubaSpa that accommodate both divers and non-divers they have spa packages and mixed dive-spa packages available. Option 2 is to split your stay between 2 different regions.
For example — you could spend one week in a more remote atoll that requires domestic flight, like Vaavu or the North Hanimaadhoo Island and another week in a more central atoll. Hanifaru bay and that region is very famous for these megafauna. I hope that helps! Thank you for promoting experience of local tourism. Have a nice day, Massimo.
Guest houses along with the safari boats are the most interesting budget holidays in Maldives. If you want to avoid transportation expenses i recommend you to choose a local island in North Male atoll or south Male Atoll … forget about Rashdoo, Ari or other atolls, way too far from Male by public transportation.
In north Male atolls you have different famous local islands such as Maafushi, Tulusdhoo, Guraidhoo… all these islands have a lot of cheap guests houses.
You can reach these islands by public transportation from male directly. On friday there is usually only one boat departing from male. Do not hesitate to ask the guests houses and they will give you all the information regarding transfers. Otherwise if you are a group and you want to travel and discover Maldives , sandbanks, robinson island, different snorkeling spots, local islands, diving, surfing then i recommend you budget cruise holidays.
Thanks for the addition of the great information. However, for divers and those who just want to get away from the tourist masses in the Male region, getting beyond the central atolls to Ari and Rasdhoo or others will provide better diving experiences.
I found your comment quite useful as I am also planning to visit Maldive. I think think there is one correction Maafushi is in South Male Atoll and not in North Male as you mentioned in the comment. Am I correct? Best regards, Abdul. I have plans going to Maldives in the 3rd quarter.
How much should I account for food cost and accommodation cost for my trip? So thought you might help. Appreciate your response if you would ever be able to read this, amidst your busy-ness. Hi Raymond! Let me look into it and get back to you. In the meantime, the cheapest islands are Maafushi and any accessible by local ferry. You can also compare packages with and without meals. Without meals may be cheaper but many islands are limited in their food options outside the guesthouse.
More later. Male, the capital of the Maldives Islands is a charming city. It boasts a number of recognized landmarks which should be on the itinerary of every visitor planning a Maldives city tour. You can explore many places to visit in male. I love Maafushi! There is a bridge that connect Guraidhoo and this island 3 To get discounted prices send a message via their website. I found from some Belarus guy that lives there very useful.
A lot of well described local islands and some tips. Maldives is one of my favorite travel destinations in Asia. And I think to experience best of Luxury travel in Asia, you have to visit Maldives… it offers to many amazing things to do for its tourists that everybody ought to live this place. Agness of a TukTuk. Your article is fantastic touched all the important points.
Again Loved clara caso. Great post, I am getting excited! Yes, the airport transfers can be costly… have to get over my fear of riding in a seaplane. Thanks for info!! How do you find out all this info? Flight over is no problem but all these choices for where to stay. I do want 3 nights in the bungalow! How come the alcohol is not included in all inclusive? It just depends on the resort. I assume that their thinking is if you can afford to go to the Maldives, you can afford to pay extra for alcohol.
Wow, lovely breakdown. Try French Polenesia. We are going in November, staying on the island of Moorea. Not all inclusive tho. Thanks for your helpful article, can you please explain more about taxes? I checked booking. Where should I pay that?
I will be appreciated if you can explain this. This is very informative and makes me feel like I want to go to Maldives once in my lifetime. I would probably be able to splurge once. I would definitely stay at an over water bungalow. I would be coming in from the states, so it will be expensive. Having a goal of splurging on one ultimate vacation is what keeps me going.
So i want to visit the Maldives by November this year and i want a simple experience, accommodation, feeding and a little outting aroubd town…with someone from the USA. I am from Africa and i will be meeting her for the first time in Maldives and will spend a month. Yes, this most definitely and I love the beach! Facebook Twitter Linkedin Instagram Rss.
I struggle to get as nice a room in London for that price. So, the Maldives prices are not totally out of whack. Yes, this paradise has attracted some over-the-top properties charging over-the-top rates for the billionaire set, but you can get the same blue tapestry sea, enchanting sunsets, swaying palm trees and aquatics wonderland for the price of a chain hotel in a major city. If beautiful beaches and stunning snorkelling is what you are after then the Maldives are difficult to beat - after our trip this year we have decided that maybe the Maldives isn't quite right for us until our children have grown a little youngest is 4 - so Center Parcs here we come As a family we will be back in maybe 3 years once little ones are more mature and able to occupy themselves a little better - my children are already insisting that the next trip needs to include a water villa.
The Maldives is a unique destination and is worth every penny there is obviously a huge investment to set up a high quality hotel on a tiny desert island in a remote location, everything needs to be imported, staff need to live on the island and water needs to be produced by desalination which has a very high cost most resorts have about the same number off staff as guests that it can accommodate all of this will make prices higher.
Food and drinks prices at more reasonable resorts are equivalent or less than hotel prices in the U. As others have said it is expensive but worth it and we have not found anywhere as perfect for us. Those perfectly formed tiny islands, with powder soft white sand and reefs teeming with fish life keep drawing us back and, for us, are worth every penny!
Everyone one of those things you can get better for less elsewhere. You can go to Dubai , India, Caribbean, Thailand, etc and tick whichever of those boxes is the most important for less money then in the Maldives.
And you're either prepared to compromise or pay more for the other things and I dont mean the food etc is rubbish, just you can get better value elsewhere.
Then it's relatively cheap compared to equivalent alternatives. To provide some context, I've been looking for a last minute short haul beach holiday. Both are shoulder season for their respective destinations. The Maldives trip seems distinctly more "worth it" then the Greek one. Skip to main content. I tried 6 different hotels in different atolls and landscapes are quite similar and i didn't find a real nice hotel, with a good room and a good restaurant as food is basic and they used a lot of industrial food bread, croissants, cakes, ice creams, sauces..
Most of the food is imported. They constructed a lot of resorts with hundreds of rooms and charm has gone. It's close to China and famous for honeymoons but Maldives are small but they pollute a lot with such mass market tourism : for transports boats, seaplanes to reach the islands, for electricity as all rooms have AC , water as they desalinate salted water and in some resorts, they welcome you with waves breakers in the lagoon to stop the waved and avoid floods.
So it will be worst and worst with the climate change. I think they have too much rooms for the number of tourists and i booked too early my hotels non refundable - and after the prices dropped so i advice you to book a cancellable room and check time to time if there is a better offer in another hotel or cheaper in the same hotel. It's what i will do for all my next trips. If you couldn't find decent accommodation and food for per night I think it's down to your poor research and preparation.
The Maldives is a fantastic destination but as with all country's you need to do your research. It's always good to have a different perspective, but I agree with Darryl that more research and preparation for your trip could perhaps have made a difference and made your holiday more enjoyable.
However I think it's true to say that most destinations in the world will have changed pretty significantly in 14 years and it's perhaps a little short sighted to have expected everything to have stayed the same as you experienced on your first trip.
Booking non refundable rates for accommodation and flights is of course always a risk That's the same for every destination in the World and not unique to The Maldives. I do believe that as a destination The Maldives requires a lot of research to find a resort that best matches your preferences, wishlist and budget and that time spent researching will pay off handsomely in most cases.
There are now well over private resorts and they range in size, location, price, feel and level of service and facilities offered and there probably is "something for everyone". From his review he spent 2 nights at the Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru , I think he has compared the resort to other high end 5 star Hotels around the world he has reviewed. I must admit the star rating for Hotels around the world is very misleading as peoples perception of luxury can differ a lot.
