Plenty of characters are victims of circumstance. They would have crumbled under the insurmountable odds that Bane faced from the moment of his birth.

Bane rose above his environment and forced himself into peak spiritual and physical health. After Bane rose to power within the prison, the guards decided to knock him down a notch. The jailers forced Dorrance to participate in what had been an unsuccessful experiment to create a super soldier. When other prisoners were exposed to Venom, none of them survived the experience.

Rather than serving his captors or the government, Bane made his way to Gotham, and the rest is history. Bane had his sights set on Batman long before they met. When fellow inmates spread stories of a monster in Gotham, it was only a matter of time before Bane clashed with Batman.

Gotham itself fascinated Bane, too. Like the prison he had called home for his entire life, Gotham was fueled by fear. Bane sought to end that reign of dominance so he could set the city free. At the end of his time with the Secret Six, Bane is arrested again but, once more, he manages to escape. Even when Bane is not in captivity, he helps liberate others.

Any time Dorrance is captured, he continues to demonstrate that no prison can hold him, or his allies, for long. When Bane defeated Batman and forced the Dark Knight into temporary retirement, he drastically changed the landscape of crime in Gotham. Logically, Bane filled the sudden void of power. No other villain could flaunt such a legitimate claim to the throne and, additionally, no one dared to oppose the man that broke Batman. Their first fight pushed Bane to the limit. Eventually, by severing his Venom tubes, Valley took Bane down and sent him to prison.

For a while, though, Bane reigned supreme. One of the first things that comes to mind about Bane is his imposing figure. He also weighs approximately pounds of pure muscle. Even without Venom, Bane is a big man. This approach makes Bane an intimidating adversary, but it makes him a one-dimensional villain. He has also adopted a more peaceful demeanor. As part of the team, Bane was joined by Catman and Ragdoll on a mission to stop criminals in Gotham City after Batman's death.

Catman and Bane had a discussion about their suitable positions to take place as Gotham's vigilantes. Their hopes however, were crushed when Nightwing banished them from Gotham and they decided to move on as the Secret Six. Since joining the team, he became very attached to Scandal Savage, though not in a romantic way. He views her as his pseudo daughter and grew to love her, even becoming furious when someone hurts her or calls her derogatory words.

In some lighter moments, he chastises her for using foul language, shows concern over what foods she should eat to have proper nutrition, and even tried to send her to her room when he was angry with her. However, this belief does not keep him from loving Scandal as a daughter, going so far as trying to conquer another world in an attempt to give her a safe place to call home where they could be family and free of enemies.

He has also assumed a role of leadership in the Secret Six by his own executive decision, believing the team was too disorganized and needed someone to keep them in line. While the team initially protested, saying they weren't blind followers, he has become leader none the less. Though admittedly, the team does not always listen to his orders, for example, they entered a cult base to save Black Alice their newest teammate when Bane had directly ordered them not to until they'd gotten more information.
